Acton Refinery, UK

Our Acton Refinery is in one of the largest industrial estates on the outskirts of London, England. It was built in 1924 along with housing for employees, and the area still includes Canada Road, where several pensioners still reside.

The Acton Refinery originally recovered precious metals from the residue obtained from our nickel refinery at Clydach, Wales. However, over its lifetime, Acton has become one of the world’s major refiners of platinum-group metals (PGMs) platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium and iridium, as well as gold and silver. It also processes primary mining concentrates and secondary materials such as recycled spent catalysts and electronic scrap. That portion of the business has steadily grown over the last 20 years and is now a major source of earnings.

The Refinery's proximity to Heathrow Airport is an advantage in terms of security and speed of feedstock and finished metal delivery.

Today, the Refinery has approximately 120 employees.

Community Involvement

As part of an industrial estate occupied by many companies in a diversity of industries, the Acton Refinery works through an "employers forum" known as Park Royal Partnership on matters of common interest such as transport, security, and skills development.

Its primary charitable activity is an annual donation to the voluntary association that provides support to the local hospital, Middlesex General.

Environment

The Acton Refinery is a leader in promoting environmental responsibility. It was one of the first Inco locations to have its environmental management system ISO-14001 certified. In recognition of the fact that operating a refinery and chemical plant in the middle of the city involves particular environmental challenges, our operation maintains close communications with regulating authorities, the local community and customers on issues related to the environment.

The Acton Refinery is also OHSAS 18001 certified.
