Vale Inco recovers copper from the sulphide ores mined in the Sudbury area of Ontario. About 93 per cent of the copper is electro-refined into Grade A copper cathodes and sold under the brand name ORCĀ® to industrial users in North America The ORCĀ® copper conforms to BS 6017-1981 (Cu-CATH-1) and ASTM B 115-91 standards and is registered on both the London Metal Exchange and New York Mercantile Exchange. About seven per cent of the copper is electrowon and sold unbranded in North America.
Copper is a practical metal that has been valued for centuries for its resistance to corrosion, conductive qualities, and pleasing appearance. It is found in the plumbing and wiring of homes throughout the world, as well as appliances, telephone lines, and electric motors. Electrical applications alone account for some 65 per cent of the copper consumed in Canada.
